4th July 2009 Red Sands Radio Launch

With daily sailings from the South Quay, Whitstable Harbour, the Greta sails around the Thames Estuary and depending on the Skipper you might see the Wind Farm, the WWII Red Sands Army Forts or the seals around the isle of Sheppey.

Several appliances from the Whitstable Fire station congregated at the harbour. A pair of massive tanks and pumps were off-loaded and tested in a training excercise.
 
These units are used to pump flood water and work on fires that require masses of water at high pressure

The Balmoral is one of several passenger ships that visit Whitstable on a regular basis. If you are not coming by ship, try the Park & Ride service.

 

Red Sands Radio spoke to Whitstable Harbour's Senior Port Controller Mike Gambrill & after berthing safely on the WestQuay, Balmoral Skipper Ian Clarke. Ian lives in Ashford and is also a Captain of the Waverly, another historic ship that calls at Whitstable Harbour The Waverley is the last sea going paddle steamer in the world!

listener Jon Leigh is a pilot and appeared  on today's 'Live lunch show.

Jon likes to fly his Pelican aircraft  in his spare time. It's the only one of its type in the UK. The Canadian designed is just over 4 years old. It is powered by a Rotax engine and has a range of four hours or about four hundred miles.

Looking forward to  taking Bob for a flight later on to photograph the towers.
