Whitstable Regatta 2009

Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th August 2009 Whitstable & Herne Bay Lions Club proudly present the 216th Anniversary of the Whitstable Regatta.

This year we will be having rowing and yacht races thanks to both Herne Bay Rowing Club and Tankerton Bay Sailing Club, against the background of the Barge Race on the Saturday with over 50 boats taking part.

We offer for those who prefer the land, a giant funfair with rides and attractions for all, Punch and Judy, Magic shows, live music, coconut shy and candy floss, hot and cold food and stalls of all types. A dog show on the Saturday (so bring your dog along) it's not Cruft's but never mind. The Margate donkey's have taken the weekend off to be there. Motor bikes and cars of yester year and also the latest models for you to see. Not forgetting at dusk a fantastic firework display out in the bay, with the added bonus of the reflection of all the lights in the water on Saturday evening. We believe there is something for everybody.

There will be Team Guinot Wingwalkers on the Sunday as a finale for the weekend. Not forgetting a sea borne display by Whitstable RNLI.

To be held on Tankerton Slopes, Marine Parade, Tankerton, starting at 11am on Saturday and finishing about 5 pm on Sunday 9th August with a break for sleep in between.

The first Regatta was run on Tuesday 7th August 1792 between 26 boats from Whitstable and Faversham to test the boating skills of the local boatmen and sailors. It has taken place every year since with the exception of the two world wars. It is possibly the oldest event of it type in the world.
